Canada Reads 2015/Winner of the 14th Edition : Ru by Kim Thuy
(firmenpresse) - MONTREAL, QUEBEC -- (Marketwired) -- 03/19/15 -- Defended by Cameron Bailey, artistic director of the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), the English-language edition of Ru, by Kim Thuy - translated by Sheila Fischman and published by Random House Canada - has won the 14th edition of Canada Reads 2015. For Kim Thuy, "once again, this award goes to confirm that my life is a fairy tale and that Ru has been carried along by 'princes'. Cameron Bailey defended Ru with the elegance of great men, and this win completely belongs to him since Ru could easily have lost on the first day." This year's "battle of the books" included other prestigious titles: And the Birds Rained Down by Jocelyne Saucier (Il pleuvait des oiseaux in the original French), Intolerable: A Memoir of Extremes by Kamal Al-Solaylee, The Inconvenient Indian by Thomas King and When Everything Feels like the Movies by Raziel Reid.
ABOUT CANADA READS
Organized by the CBC, Canada Reads 2015 is a week-long battle of books featuring titles that can break barriers: changing perspectives, challenging stereotypes as well as promoting great literature. Five panelists face each other in a series of debates in which they discuss, argue and respond to criticism from their adversaries in order to better highlight their book's literary merit. After each joust, the panelists vote for a different book to be eliminated and at the end of the week one book is proclaimed the winner. Each book was personally chosen by the panelist defending it and all present a literary palette of many colours.
THE AUTHOR / HONOURS AND LITERARY AWARDS
Kim Thuy left Vietnam with the first boat people at the age of ten. She has been a seamstress, an interpreter, a lawyer, the owner of the Montreal restaurant Ru de Nam, and a food commentator on radio and television (A la di Stasio, Des kiwis et des hommes, etc.). She lives now in Montreal and devotes her time to writing. Ru, her first book, was published by Editions Libre Expression in October 2009 and was a best-seller in Quebec and in France. The rights to Ru have been sold in twenty-five countries, including China and several Arabic-speaking countries. Ru won the prestigious Governor General's Award in 2010, the Grand prix RTL-Lire in 2010 and the Grand prix du Salon du livre de Montreal in 2010.
