(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 03/30/15 -- His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, will attend the National We Day event at the Canadian Tire Centre, in Ottawa, on April 1, 2015, at 10:30 a.m. He will share his views on the importance of giving and volunteering in the community before an audience of 16 000 youth and educators. The event will be streamed live online at starting at 9:00 a.m. EST.

"We Day is a wonderful celebration of giving," His Excellency said. "I'm delighted to have this opportunity to recognize young people who are making a difference, and to encourage all young Canadians to get involved in building a better country and world."

Before His Excellency's appearance on stage, he will present the Caring Canadian Award to 20 inspiring youth who have made a difference through local and global volunteering. The recipients' names and citations will be available upon request.

We Day is a movement of young people leading local and global change. This year alone, over 200 000 young people will come together in 14 cities across North America and the U.K. to take part in this unprecedented educational initiative. More than a one-day event, We Day is connected to the year-long We Act program, which provides educational resources and campaigns to help young people turn the day's inspiration into sustained action. We Day and We Act are cause inclusive, empowering young people to find their passion and create the change they want to see. Together, We Day and We Act are a blueprint for building the next generation of global citizens.

We Day is an initiative of Free the Children of which the Governor General is patron. Free the Children is an organization that helps young people achieve their fullest potential as agents of change. This year, it is celebrating its 20th anniversary.
