Sudan-Inspired Mountaineers Hit Milestone: 24 Peaks Down, 34 to Go
Awareness-Building Effort Pays Off for Denver-Based NGO, Project Education Sudan
(firmenpresse) - DENVER, CO -- (Marketwire) -- 07/27/11 -- Mountain climbers Joe Rogers and Nick Spivey have a goal: summit 58 Colorado 14ers between July 2 and Sept. 9. In doing so, they will trek 350 miles in just 70 days.
Now, less than one month into their quest, Rogers and Spivey are almost halfway finished -- but with several technical climbs to come and with bodies tired and rebelling from strain, the next weeks won't be easy.
The climbers have lost about 15 pounds overall. Rogers is battling an eye infection and Georgia resident, Spivey, continues to acclimate to Colorado's higher altitude. Still, their aches and pains provide renewed empathy for their inspiration: the famed "Lost Boys" of South Sudan who, as children, walked across Africa to escape violence.
Rogers learned about their story from Denver-based NGO, Project Education Sudan (PES). He met several Lost Boys, now young men, and partnered with college pal, Spivey, to raise awareness of South Sudan's ongoing need for support building an education system.
"The Republic of South Sudan became an independent nation on July 9," Rogers said. "Millions of South Sudanese died to help their nation be free. The international community has a lot of work to do to ensure South Sudan progresses to the next step: a strong, stable democracy."
"Joe and I were privileged to have access to a great education," Spivey adds. "We couldn't think of a better focus for the summer than using our outdoor skills to raise awareness of PES's work building schools and educational infrastructure in South Sudan."
PES' commitment to sustainable philanthropy ensures close collaboration with local community leaders on educational projects such as teacher and leadership training, construction of classrooms, and dorms to allow girls to stay in school.
"Today, more than 3,000 children attend PES schools," says Carol Rinehart, PES founder and executive director. "Joe and Nick have done a fabulous job raising awareness of our work. Thanks to generous contributions from businesses and individuals, we've raised more than $57,000 in the past two months towards our $100,000 goal. With two months left in our 'climbing summer,' we're well on the way to funding additional classrooms and education projects in South Sudan."
