Call of the Sea Announces Merger With Educational Tall Ship

ID: 385609

(firmenpresse) - SAUSALITO, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 04/14/15 -- The Call of the Sea and the Educational Tall Ship organizations have announced that the two non-profits that have worked closely together for several years are now officially merged. Call of the Sea (COTS) has operated the Schooner Seaward for the past 10 years, providing a hands-on marine and environmental educational experience for school children, and the Educational Tall Ship program has been constructing the Matthew Turner, another tall ship, that will also be a floating classroom for students when launched in 2016.

The mission of both organizations that have now joined forces is to connect people to the sea and to maritime traditions, especially young people, helping them to unleash their potential through experiential, environmental education under sail. Using their tall ships as an educational platform, COTS offers programs that range from three hours to two weeks, often venturing as far as Mexico. Also, joining the new merged team is the Golden Gate Tall Ships Society. They have endeavored to raise funds for young sailors in need for thirty years and will now continue their work through Call of the Sea's scholarship program.

The Seaward has served over 35,000 children since its inception, teaching teamwork, environmental stewardship and leadership skills on the water. When completed, the Matthew Turner will offer the same innovative educational experience empowering children of all ages to serve as environmental stewards. Both vessels will be based in Sausalito and sailing the SF Bay, the California coast and the Pacific coast of Mexico. The ships also offer public sails and private charters.

The first tall ship to be built in the San Francisco Bay Area in over 100 years, the Matthew Turner blends old-world craftsmanship with 21st century sustainable building and operational technologies. This includes an electric propulsion system that regenerates the storage batteries while sailing, and the use of eco-friendly materials. The ship has been almost entirely built by a dedicated corps of volunteers, and funded to date by a capital campaign that has raised over $4 million. While the Matthew Turner is almost completely framed now and towers higher than three office building floors, an additional $1.5 million in funding is needed in order to complete the historic project.

The Schooner Seaward has provided scholarships for its program to thousands of children in the past decade and continues to raise funds for this important educational opportunity, ensuring that every child, regardless of background or circumstance, can learn outside the classroom.

With the merger, Alan Olson will continue as Project Director of the Matthew Turner and Charles Hart will continue as Executive Director of Call of the Sea.
