(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 04/17/15 -- Secular Ontario, a non-profit corporation formed to promote and defend the secular and civil nature of society, applauds the Supreme Court of Canada's unanimous decision in "Mouvement laique quebecois v. Saguenay (City)".

Secular Ontario welcomes the SCC's conclusion that the "express provisions of the Canadian Charter ... such as those regarding freedom of conscience and religion, must be given a generous and expansive interpretation."

As Justice Clement Gascon put it (to his great credit as a Quebec Roman Catholic):

"The evolution of Canadian society has given rise to a concept of this neutrality according to which the state must not interfere in religion and beliefs. The state must instead remain neutral in this regard, which means that it must neither favour nor hinder any particular belief, and the same holds true for non-belief."

"Secular Ontario will continue to work with municipalities to encourage them to follow the SCC's ruling and provide a secular public space for all its residents," said SO's President, Sheila Ayala.

Secular Ontario's efforts are actively supported, at the national level, by Humanist Canada.
