How Easy to do a Office Move
The office move was a phenomenal task and one that had to be carried out carefully so that we did not end up in mess at the destination with tempers flaring and bruised egos.
(firmenpresse) - I remember a time roughly 15 year back, one of my previous employers had made me part of a management team to overlook an office move. Our rental term had expired and since the place had become upmarket, the owner of the premises was trying to extort an exorbitant rent for a new lease so my boss decided to move our office to another location.
Back then despite being a smallish firm with a staff of 18, the office move was anything but small or easy. There were several dozen boxes of ‘client files’ to be packed, there were staff files, maintenance files and all kinds of other files. There were all kinds of furniture some of which like the drafting table was custom made and oddly shaped. Back then, there were heavy laptop computers and heavier desktop computers. There were line printers, inkjet printers and wide-format printers. Then there was the server which I recollect felt like it weight as much as I did. There were miles of networking cables and switches and routers.
I recollect that the planning for the office move itself took us over a week. One of the tasks I personally had to attend to was to procurement of the cardboard boxes. We had to plan the dimensions and the quantities that would be required and I recollect having to visit several suppliers before our requirements were met.
Like a grand ship preparing for a long cruise, the actual office move itself began a full three days ahead of date of the move. All staff had to help pack their workstations. Each box had to be properly lined with packing material to cushion any movement it might receive during the journey. Each box had to be tagged, numbered, and contents listed.
The office move was a phenomenal task and one that had to be carried out carefully so that we did not end up in mess at the destination with tempers flaring and bruised egos. Yes, it was a success! The effort and planning paid off handsomely but it took quite some effort to achieve it all.
Cut to a week ago this day – the current office move was logistically on a different level all together. My boss insisted I contact Removalists Sydney and they in turn assured me that they would do the actual packing and the office move.
The staff in the present company unplugged their desktops and that was that. The staff from Removalists Brisbane to Sydney arrived a day ahead of the move and brought along with them a truck load of cardboard boxes of various sizes, packing material and bubble wrap sheets.
They set to work with practiced ease and seemed to know where to start first and what to pack first. They had neat pre-glued labels which were used for numbering and labelling while the staff were asked to write their name and a short description of the contents. That was about all we had to do for the office move. By end of the day it was all done and the team was asked to just show up at the new office location on Monday.
The next day (Saturday), boxes were neatly stacked into two very large trucks. On Sunday I arrived at the new office and didn’t have to wait long. The trucks arrived, were off-loaded and the staff from Sydney furniture removalists quickly unpacked everything into pre-designated areas of the new office. Come Monday, the staff took a couple of hours to put things into their precise position. By the afternoon we were done! That is how easy an office move is these days.
