Texas Ranks Second in Nation for West Nile Virus Disease Cases
Top 10 States With the Most Cases of West Nile Virus in 2012, 2013, 2014

(firmenpresse) - CARROLLTON, TX -- (Marketwired) -- 04/29/15 -- Texas has ranked as one of the hardest hit states by West Nile virus for three consecutive years by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Texas topped the CDC list with 1,868 West Nile virus cases in 2012, dropped down to fourth place in 2013, with 183 cases, and moved up to second place in 2014, with 353 cases. MosquitoNix, the nation's leader in mosquito control, urges people to fight against mosquitos during early springtime. While most West Nile virus cases occur from June to September, eliminating mosquitos in the spring reduces the population and lessens the chance for mosquito-borne illnesses to spread.
"As you can see from the CDC statistics, West Nile virus is an unpredictable problem that causes outbreaks and many deaths one year, and a lot of illness the next. There is no rhyme or reason to West Nile virus outbreaks. At MosquitoNix, we are in the business of protecting people's outdoor lifestyles. We would like to echo health officials who are urging people to take personal responsibility, precaution and fight against mosquitos now," said Dan O'Neal, Chairman & CEO of FEMO Group, MosquitoNix's parent company.
CDC West Nile Virus Disease Cases by State - United States - 2014, 2013, 2012
West Nile virus outbreaks occur across the world. The virus arrived in the United States in 1999. Mosquitos that have fed on birds infected with the virus spread West Nile virus. People and pets get West Nile virus after an infected mosquito bites them. West Nile virus has been detected in all states except for Hawaii and Alaska.
The number of people infected with West Nile virus may be larger than the numbers reported by the CDC and health officials. According to the CDC, 80 percent of West Nile virus infections are asymptomatic. People who do have symptoms experience a fever, headache or rash. Less than one percent of infected people develop life-threatening diseases.
To prevent catching mosquito-borne illnesses, exercise mosquito "hygiene" to lower your chances to get bitten:
Use insect repellents when you go outdoors.
Wear long sleeves and pants from dusk through dawn.
Install or repair screens on windows and doors. If you have it, use your air conditioner.
Around your home, empty standing water from containers such as flowerpots, gutters, buckets, pool covers, pet water dishes, discarded tires, and birdbaths.
