The system allows wireline and perforating service companies to help oil and gas companies lower the risk and total cost of operations of completions requiring multiple guns to be fired on a single trip into the well.

Unlike traditional perforating switches and detonators, the integrated switch-detonator requires a series of specific digital codes for initiating so that stray voltage/current, RF signals and other energy sources cannot unintentionally initiate the detonator or igniter. Because the system is intrinsically safe, a gun cannot be fired unless coded signals are received from a firing panel at surface.
Since its introduction two years ago, more than a quarter million select-fire perforations have been shot without a single safety incident.
