Canadian Fashion Industry Celebrates National Talent at Prestigious Annual Design Showcase

Last night at Toronto's One King West, Canada's fashion elite convened to witness TFI New Labels® 2015 where designs from four of Canada's top emerging fashion talent were showcased in a thrilling runway competition. Over 300 guests including fashion media, buyers, celebrities and industry supporters celebrated as Matthew Gallagher of Maison Matthew Gallagher was named Most Promising New Label, presented by Suzanne Rogers.

Matthew Gallagher showcased his collection Maison Matthew Gallagher alongside fellow finalists Valerie Tolila of VAIKEN, Benji Wong Zhen Wang for Benji WZW, and Jennifer Torosian and Raed Ali for Jennifer Torosian. With powerful designs embraced for a woman of luxury and defined allure, Matthew Gallagher won over the renowned panel of judges, which included David Dixon (Former TFI New Labels finalist), Suzanne Rogers (Gala Event Honorary Chair), and (Hudson's Bay and Lord & Taylor Senior Vice President) and Susan Langdon (Executive Director of TFI).

To be named most promising label of 2015 is gratifying, especially amongst a competition filled with such a strong display of talent," said Matthew Gallagher, designer, Maison Matthew Gallagher. "The mentorship of the judges and the entire TFI team will not be forgotten and I cannot wait to apply this learning to my next collection."

The Prize

As the winning designer, Matthew Gallagher received a $25,000 cash prize for Most Promising New Label presented by Suzanne Rogers and will also receive valuable brand awareness through an upcoming full-page feature in Canada's top fashion magazine FLARE.

The Challenge

New this year TFI partnered with Nickelodeon and Viacom to present the SpongeBob Design Challenge making a splash on the runway. The competition challenged five designers to create a high-fashion couture gown inspired by the spirit of the cult-classic cartoon character SpongeBob SquarePants. Ryan Alexander Smith of Ryan Alexander Inc. took home the $10,000 prize for his eye-catching design that embodied the spirit of SpongeBob. Other creative designs also showcased from Canadian finalists included Matthew Gallagher of Maison Matthew Gallagher, Lise Godel of Coeur De Lise Couture, Maria Ruginets of Masha Apparel, and Tanya Theberge of Theberge Designs Inc.

The Celebration

One of the most anticipated fashion events of the year, New Labels 2015 was emceed by past The Bachelor Canada star Brad Smith and included a cocktail reception and the coveted New Labels® fashion show. Entertainment also included a special live performance by Canadian singer, songwriter and MMVA winner Danny Fernandes. Notable supporters of Canadian fashion and industry VIPs were in attendance, including Sylvia Mantella, Edward Rogers, Simona Shnaider, Jenna Bitove, FLARE Publisher Melissa Ahlstrand, and many more.
