The implantable device was recently approved by the FDA for the correction of near vision in those who have not previously undergone cataract surgery. The KAMRA inlay procedure involves creating a small pocket n the cornea with a laser. This is created in only one eye -- typically the non-dominant eye -- with the purpose of improving near vision and not affecting the collaborative distant vision of both eyes. Dr. Faulkner explains that once the pocket is made, he gently inserts the implant, centering it on the line of sight. He notes that the implantation can be performed as a standalone procedure, in addition to or , or following refractive eye surgery.
The device is an effective way to restore patients' vision of nearby objects, due to the intricate design of the implant. The center of the inlay is open, which allows focused light to pass through while blocking unfocused peripheral light. As a result, the patient's ability to focus on close-up objects, as well as reading, is improved.

After earning his Bachelor of Arts from Northwestern University, attended Tulane Medical School, located in New Orleans, Louisiana. While here, he completed extensive training through an internship in Internal Medicine, a residency in Ophthalmology, and a Fellowship in Oculoplastics, Ocular Oncology, and Orbital Disease. Following graduation, Dr. Faulkner became part of the full-time faculty as an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology. He later joined his father's practice in Honolulu, before founding his private practice: Aloha Laser Vision, LLC. Dr. Faulkner stays active in the medical community through being a member of such organizations as the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons and the International Society of Refractive Surgeons, as well as being a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and a founding member of the American College of Ophthalmic Surgery.
