ESSA: Europe-wide regulations for the storage of weapons create legal clarity
Frankfurt/Main – May, 2015. Tragic attacks or accidents with weapons shock the world over and over. Appropriate storage of weapons and ammunition can help to avoid these kinds of tragedies and horrible incidents. ESSA, the leading association of the security industry, would welcome a Europe-wide regulation for the storage of weapons.
(firmenpresse) - Fatal incidents with weapons happen again and again all over the world. The European Commission is currently looking into possibilities to extend the protection transnationally. This has been stated just recently by Dimitris Avramopoulos, the new European Commissioner for Migration, Home Affairs and Citizenship policies. There needs to be a balance between security and openness, he said.
Not only illegal, but also legal possession of firearms repeatedly causes problems. “An appropriate storage of legal firearms can help to prevent a crime and supports the security of those possessing them”, says Dr. Markus Heering, managing director at ESSA.
Currently, the storage of weapons is regulated within the EU by national regulations which can deviate from each other significantly. This can cause an issue with weapons authorities in case of relocation. At the same time, there is already a suitable European Standard, EN 1143-1, which considers the latest state of the art of technology and modern burglary tools. However, the standard is not compulsory in all European member states. “A Europe-wide standardization would mean simplification for the manufacturers within the security industry, which in turn would benefit the customers”, states Heering.
ESSA makes it clear that weapon cabinets according to EN 1143-1:2012 with the ECB•S certification offer optimum protection and legal certainty.
