Outokumpu stainless steel used to build a cutting-edge spillway control system
(Thomson Reuters ONE) -
PRESS RELEASE
August 24, 2010 at 1.00 p.m. EET
Hydroplus has used Outokumpu's lean duplex LDX 2101® stainless steel in the
upgrade of the La Para dam in Adelaide, Australia with Fusegates®, the company's
proprietary technology to increase reservoir storage capacity with the help of a
non-mechanical structure that sits atop the spillway of a dam.
The La Para Fusegates® are a unique spillway control system, representing the
most technically advanced and structurally efficient technology in the world.
The key to the innovation is an all stainless steel structure - the first in the
world - and use of Outokumpu's lean duplex LDX 2101® stainless steel.
The new system has been designed to meet demanding requirements. The customer,
SA Water, targets 100-year design life and virtually no maintenance. In
addition, Hydroplus has sought to reduce construction time on site and to
deliver a carbon neutral project.
The benefits from using duplex LDX 2101® are close to double the yield strength
compared to the austenitic grade and a significant cost advantage.
Bill Hakin, Hydroplus's Regional Director in Australia, says, "The use of LDX
2101® duplex stainless steel in a structurally efficient design has been a smart
solution which has reduced risk, time on site and overhead costs compared to the
more traditional approach."
Hydroplus is the pioneer of Fusegates® and the sole producer of the technology
in the world. Since inventing the technology in 1989, the company has installed
more than 50 Hydroplus Fusegate® Systems around the world.
Outokumpu is a leading stainless steel supplier and the world's foremost
producer of duplex stainless steel. Outokumpu has pioneered a large number of
applications using duplex stainless steel that help Outokumpu customers to
develop increasingly competitive products and technologies.
