(Thomson Reuters ONE) - DUBLIN, IRELAND--(Marketwire - July 30, 2009) - The cycling equipmentindustry today announced the formation of the Global Organization ofCycling Equipment Manufacturers (GOCEM) with the objective ofproviding a unified voice for the cycling industry. GOCEM's long-termmission and goal is to pursue a collaborative and consultativeapproach with the international cycling federation - the UnionCycliste Internationale (UCI) - for the creation, implementation andenforcement of UCI rules, as they have a direct impact on thefinancial viability of equipment manufacturers."Cycling Equipment manufacturers (frames, components, wheels, drivetrains, helmets, apparel), represent the largest and most influentialcontributors to both the cycling industry and professional cycling,"said Phil White, co-founder of Cervelo and one of the coordinators ofthe GOCEM founding group. "Providing approximately 100 million Eurosannually in sponsorship, product and support, manufacturers have thegreatest investment and a vested interest in the success and growthof the sport.""GOCEM is a global organization that has attracted universalsupport," explained Claudio Marra, general manager of FSA and acoordinator of the GOCEM founding group. "From Asia to Europe andNorth America, we have seen tremendous interest from theinternational community of cycling equipment manufacturers."GOCEM was formed as a coalition of manufacturers who are affected bythe UCI's interpretation of its Rules and Regulations. Initially itwill consist of manufacturers who supply equipment to ProTour andContinental Pro/Wildcard teams. When cycling teams select equipment for their riders, they aresubject to the rules and regulations promulgated by the UCI. OnJanuary 13, 2009, the UCI informed teams that they would start toenforce its "3:1 rule" on all parts and components, not just theframe tubes as it had previously."(1)This interpretation caught manufacturers unaware. The concern thatthe strict and immediate enforcement of the "3:1 rule" couldpotentially cause significant financial hardship on manufacturers andteams, especially in this extremely poor economic climate was one ofthe catalysts that prompted the formation of GOCEM. However, thebigger opportunity and the organization's long-term goal are tocreate greater stability and professionalism in all aspects of thesport. At this time it is not possible for the UCI to obtain a comprehensiveopinion or full input from manufacturers since no formal line ofcommunication exists and until now, there has been no formalmechanism for manufacturer interaction with the UCI. The UCI, throughM. Philippe Chevallier (Manager, UCI Road Department), has expressedboth its support for a single manufacturer's association and awillingness to work with such an organization."GOCEM welcomes the UCI's willingness to collaborate with us andlooks forward to a mutually-beneficial dialogue," said Claudio Marra.Founding members of GOCEM include: A-Team (Taiwan Bike CompanyAssociation representing Merida, Velo, Maxxis, Alex, Rims, Formula,VP components, Well-go, RS-Suntour, KMC, Truvativ, Kenda, Topeak, THIndustries, Tektro, Joytec, Jagwire and RST), BH, Bianchi, BMC,Cannondale, Canyon, Cervelo SA, Cinelli, COLIPED, Felt, Focus,FSA/Vision, Fuji, Giant, GT, Hed, Look, Mavic, Orbea, Oval, Prologo,Quark, Ritchey, Rotor, Specialized, Sram, Teschner, Time, 3T andZipp. For further information, please visit www.gocem.org.(1) See James Huang, "A possible disaster on the horizon", (CyclingNews: February 17, 2009).
