Moldova's Starnet boosts national optical network with an NEC and Transmode installation
(Thomson Reuters ONE) -
Tokyo, Japan and Stockholm, Sweden - 16(th) September 2010 - NEC Corporation, a
leading provider of microwave and optical solutions, and Transmode, a leading
provider of Optical Networking Solutions, today announced that Moldova-based
Starnet has extended and improved its national optical network with the
installation of a Transmode TM-Series DWDM network.
Starnet is Moldova's main provider of Internet services across the 34,000 km(2)
country, which became independent in 1991 following the break-up of the former
Soviet Union.
The company offers its clients services ranging from IPTV and high-speed
broadband to web hosting and server installation. StarNet also runs a Gigabit
Ethernet passive optical network on which they offer dedicated internet
services.
NEC, one of Transmode's main installation and distribution partners, has managed
the implementation of StarNet's new optical network, which is based on eight 10
Gbit/s DWDM channels. The key Transmode system deployed is the TM-3000, which is
configured to allow for significant expansion in transmission capacity as future
demand grows.
StarNet's fibre-optic network, centred on capital city Chi?in?u,( )offers its
clients the highest speed internet and intranet connections in the country, up
to 1 Gbit/s or even 10 Gbit/s for high capacity business services.
Starnet's Technical Manager Oleg Burlacu commented on the company's future plans
in relation to WDM implementation: "The liberalization of Moldova's
telecommunications market is giving us new opportunities to develop competitive
services for our customers. As traffic demand is growing, the Transmode solution
has presented us with the flexibility to meet both our current and likely future
needs."
He continued, "We are very pleased with the deployment as the equipment works
perfectly. We are particularly impressed with the low power consumption, which
is a factor of ten lower than the previous metro DWDM solution that we deployed.
In the near future we will be expanding our DWDM network between Moldova and
Romania to carry many more 10 GbE and SDH services together over one system. We
will also be deploying Transmode equipment for intra- and inter-city rings
within Moldova itself."
NEC's Nicolae Varvara, Regional Manager at NEC Romania, commented that he was
very pleased that StarNet decided to choose Transmode equipment for the
installation. "Together with Transmode, NEC is making good progress in
developing our markets in South Eastern Europe and Russia. The emergence of new
telecommunications markets and increasing consumer demand in these territories
is a great opportunity for Transmode's flexible yet economical solutions."
Transmode's CEO Karl Thedéen also commented "This win is another example of the
strong partnership between NEC and Transmode and shows how well our portfolios
combine to produce a very strong end to end solution. Eastern Europe continues
to show strong growth for Transmode as deployments such as this one with StarNet
demonstrate."
