New Portfolios in Trudeau Government a Hopeful Sign for Restoration of Government Science, Says PIPSC President

(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 11/04/15 -- The President of the Professional Institute of the Public Service (PIPSC) congratulates Prime Minister Trudeau on the swearing-in of his new government and, in particular, MP Scott Brison on his appointment as President of the Treasury Board Secretariat.
"We welcome the new government and look forward to working together to restore Canada's public service so that it can truly meet the needs and aspirations of all Canadians," said PIPSC President Debi Daviau. "We look forward to real change based on the important commitments Prime Minister Trudeau and his cabinet have brought with them into office."
The Liberal Party's campaign platform included commitments to fair and constructive collective bargaining with public service workers, to rescind anti-labour legislation, to end the muzzling of government scientists and to put evidence back at the heart of policy making.
The Liberal Party also campaigned on commitments to reinvest in the integrity of Canada's tax system and to reduce the outsourcing of government services.
"While it's very early to say, the division of science into separate portfolios is a hopeful indication that the new government intends to restore the roles of science and evidence-based policy in government," added Daviau, "a promise made during the election campaign and that we look forward to seeing fulfilled."
The Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada represents some 55,000 professionals and scientists across Canada's public sector.
