Experts Reveal One’s Mental Health May Determine Arthritis Pain

The University of California-Davis School of Medicine researchers found out that individuals with better mental health experience less pain. Those with worse mental health also feel more severe pain. According to Barton L. Wise, an assistant professor of general internal medicine and the lead author of the study, they found that high pain intensity and flares were associated with worse mental health.
The study called Psychological Factors and Their Relation To Osteoarthritis Pain” was published in the Osteoarthritis and Cartilage journal. Wise, who is also a UC-Davis Center for Healthy Aging researcher, and his colleagues conducted the research to study the episodic nature of the pain caused by osteoarthritis.
The wanted to determine the changes in the pain that sufferers feel in their hip or knee and if the changes are associated with the structural changes of their joints. Pain is believed to vary over time, and it can go from little to severe.
There is an estimated number of 27 million individuals in the United States who suffer from osteoarthritis. This degenerative disease involves cartilage loss in the joints. It usually produces symptoms such as tenderness, joint pain, and stiffness in the hips, knees, and spine.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, osteoarthritis is the number one cause of knee-and hip-replacement surgery. There have been studies that tried to investigate the connection between pain and the psychological state of sufferers.
In a research, the researchers used the 266 participants of the Longitudinal Examination of Arthritis Pain Study. This previous study aimed at determining the relationship between pain, its fluctuations, and the health outcomes. It was found that those with worse mental health experienced more pain.
