Canada's Labour Minister Meets With Representatives of the Canadian Port Sector to Discuss Important Industry Issues
(firmenpresse) - SEPT-ILES, QUEBEC -- (Marketwire) -- 08/08/11 -- The Honourable Lisa Raitt, Canada's Minister of Labour, today met with key stakeholders during a round table discussion on issues facing maritime shipping within Canada.
"I would like to thank all the participants for sharing their views and best-practice approaches with respect to important issues in the Canadian port industry," said Minister Raitt. "Promoting economic growth requires a partnership between employers, employees and government. Together, we can work toward achieving a model for fair, respectful and healthy workplaces that will lead to a strong and prosperous Canada."
The round table was an opportunity for the Minister to exchange views with and seek input from participants on a number of issues faced by the maritime port industry. Discussion topics included the importance of healthy workplace relations, preventive mediation and the effects of good labour relations on the economy, competitiveness, and trends in the continental and international marine market.
The visit highlights the Government of Canada's commitment to harmonious labour-management relations that benefit both our country's economic prosperity and the economic security of Canadians.
The Labour Program develops, administers and enforces workplace legislation and regulations, such as the Canada Labour Code, which covers industrial relations, health and safety and employment standards. These laws apply to federally regulated workers and employers.
