MEDIA BROADCAST delivers Bundesliga coverage – including in HD

(firmenpresse) - Bonn, 6 August 2009 – MEDIA BROADCAST will be supporting ARD as a major service provider for the new 1. Bundesliga and 2. Bundesliga seasons. A contract to this effect has just been signed with WDR, which acts as the lead broadcaster for ARD’s Bundesliga coverage. The contract provides for the transmission of TV video and audio signals from 35 Bundesliga stadiums to the WDR broadcast centre in Cologne. In all, MEDIA BROADCAST will transmit pictures and sound from 178 of the 1.Bundesliga games and 64 sets of 2. Bundesliga highlights for ARD Sportschau. As the customer, WDR/ARD will benefit from the services provided by MEDIA BROADCAST, which include sophisticated and secure broadcasting platforms such as Broadcast NGN and SNG technologies, each of which provides a high level of redundancy, platform HD capabilities and flexibility in terms of the ability to make additional bandwidths available at short notice, even in the case of SNG. Not least, WDR/ARD will benefit from a dedicated point of contact during service times.
SPORTCAST GmbH, a subsidiary of the DFL Sports Enterprises is responsible for video production, which will be 100 percent in HD. The ARD broadcasts will continue to be in standard definition (SD) for the first half of the 1. Bundesliga season, with high definition (HD) broadcasts starting after the winter break (the second half of the 2009/2010 season). With the launch of HDTV for ARD, viewers will experience sports reports in high definition television format. For the picture and sound signals to be broadcast, MEDIA BROADCAST will transmit the HD signals, including several discreet audio signals and back channels, to the broadcast centre via secure lines. Broadcast NGN will be used as the transmission platform.
MEDIA BROADCAST will transmit the SD signals for live match reports from the 2. Bundesliga via satellite. SNG vehicles will be used at each stadium to transmit video and audio signals. These systems offer redundant uplinks and deliver the reports in encrypted format to the broadcast centre. Furthermore, the system receives return video from production and delivers it to the ARD broadcast vehicle. The broadcasts are monitored using the additional available back channel for the entire time of transmission.
