ModiFace Publishes Academic Paper at the IEEE International Workshop on Multimedia Information Processing and Retrieval on a Method for Detecting User Skin Tones With a 98.3% Accuracy Based on the Analysis of 1.6 Million Social Media Photos From 364,012 Users

(firmenpresse) - TORONTO, ON -- (Marketwired) -- 12/16/15 -- ModiFace, the leading provider of augmented reality technology for the beauty and medical aesthetic industries, today announces the upcoming presentation of a new skin tone and undertone detection technology that is based on a large-scale study of 364,012 users with a total of 1.6 million social media photos. The new patent-pending technology uses statistical signal processing methods to compute the lighting conditions of different photos of a user on social media from which true skin-tone is estimated.

"Every selfie that we take gives information about the lighting conditions of the photo. When you have a large set of images, under varying lighting conditions, it becomes possible to statistically remove the lighting variations and get a very good sense of your true skin tone," said Parham Aarabi, founder and CEO of ModiFace who led the study.

Based on direct feedback from 119,560 users (about 1/3 of the total users), it was found that the new skin tone estimation method resulted in a normalized average color error of 1.7% (on the CIE76 scale, the L*a*b* color error was 2.31).

Details of the new technology along with further information about the data behind it will be presented at the IEEE International Workshop on Multimedia Information Processing and Retrieval in Miami, Florida, on Wednesday December 16.
