A good rule of thumb is to have six to nine months of savings to cover necessary expenses in the event of an emergency, like a job loss or disability. Beyond savings, take time to make sure you've got all of the proper protections in place, from health to life insurance and homeowners to auto insurance.
Financial unknowns can be scary at first, but you've got to understand where you stand now to be able to figure out where you can go next. Turns out top-notch credit can be your golden ticket to securing an affordable mortgage or qualifying for the best interest rates. So take a deep breath and check your credit score (for free, if you can).
