Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food Lawrence MacAulay participated in the G7 Niigata Agriculture Ministers' meeting in Japan, April 23-24, where ministers supported the adoption of the G7 Niigata Agriculture Ministers' Meeting Declaration. The Declaration focuses on work towards revitalizing rural areas and increasing farmers' income; improving sustainable agricultural production and productivity; and reducing agriculture's environmental footprint and adapting to climate change.

Minister MacAulay met for the first time with Mr. Hiroshi Moriyama, Japan's Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. He used this opportunity to build on Canada's strong trade relations with Japan and underline Canada's commitment to work together on emerging agriculture issues.

Minister MacAulay also held meetings with his U.S. and German counterparts, Secretary of Agriculture, Tom Vilsack, and Minister of Agriculture, Christian Schmidt, to discuss ways of increasing the competitiveness of the agricultural sector.
