The loadbearing towers of Rheinkai 500
Versatile NOEprop support system

(PresseBox) - An up-market residential and commercial complex is currently being built on the former customs port site in Mainz. It is only 4.50 m away from the water, which certainly presented the contractor with a small challenge, as did the staggered arrangement of balconies and the relatively wide passageway through the building. Both had to be supported for the whole of the construction period. A task thoroughly mastered by the NOEprop tower system from NOE-Schaltechnik, Süssen, Germany. However, the system offered a further advantage: It can also be use as a facade scaffold.
Since February 2015, an exclusive residential and business block has been rising from the former customs port site in Mainz. Its facade design is based on a concept submitted in a winning international competition entry by Lorenzen Architekten Berlin. The building is some 91 m long and 14 m wide. It has six storeys, two basements and an underground parking garage, extending over two levels (floor area 7,000 m²). The facade is notable for its large windows, staggered balconies and a 21 m wide passageway with spacious steps that link the upper harbour level with the lower quay wall. The position of the building is unusual: at only 4.50 m from the river bank, it is closer to the river than any other building between Mannheim and Cologne.
Construction of the structural frame
The carcase of the building was constructed by Karrié Bau GmbH & Co. KG from Mainz. The family-owned company has undertaken a wide variety of building, civil engineering and road projects over the last 30 years. On the Rheinkai 500 development (500 stands for Rhine kilometre 500), the contractor's responsibilities also included general and special earthworks. A particular challenge during the completion of the works was the balconies ? building elements that look remarkably uncomplicated at first glance. Weighing almost ten tonnes each, the balconies had to be supported during construction, which was not possible using individual support towers due to the balconies' width and staggered arrangement.
NOEprop support scaffold system
As a result, the contractor's construction planners looked for a system that would cover the whole of the facade and yet be flexible enough to accommodate balconies of this size. The contractor's team selected the NOEprop support scaffold system from NOE-Schaltechnik for the task.
The system comprises aluminium deck props and aluminium support frames, which can be assembled into towers or supporting platforms of various heights. In addition, the system can be augmented by scaffold platforms, access ladders and safety rails to make it into a very useful working scaffold. NOEprop offered the Karrié site team at Rheinkai three advantages: first, the system could be pre-assembled on the ground and erected quickly with the help of a crane. Second, NOEprop has a high load capacity (up to 160 kN/prop). And third, it can be very quickly made to incorporate working scaffolds that are acceptable to the employers' occupational insurance institutions.
The props were arranged on the Mainz site so that a tower with a load capacity of approximately 43 kN was in the area of each balcony. Supports with 47 kN load capacity per prop and an extendible length of 4.83 m were required in the area of the 21 m wide passageway (bridging scaffold element). The NOEprop 580 came into its own here. It has a permissible maximum load of 49.2 kN. Mark-Christian Gälzer, Site Manager for Karrié, says this about the tower system: "Without NOEprop, it would have been considerably more complicated for us to build the balconies. Thanks to this solution, we were able to kill two birds with one stone: we solved the problem of the balconies and gained a working platform into the bargain. I can only recommend it." In all, approximately 3750 m² of facade scaffold in the form of NOEprop were required for Rheinkai 500.
Lightweight and strong
NOEprop was an essential temporary works element, not only in the con-struction of the balconies but also in the erection of the 21 m wide pas-sageway through the building: the ceiling slabs of the two basement storeys and the first floor had to be supported throughout the whole of the construction period of the structural frame. For structural engineering reasons, this support could be removed only after the fourth floor was in place. The NOEprop system was also perfect for this job: depending on the requirements, the contractor could call on props with extendible lengths of 1.90 to 5.80 m. With a special hook tool and a spindle travel of 1.80 m, the site team were quickly and easily able to set the precise support height. The engineers could select tower widths from a minimum of 0.77 m and a maximum of 2.40 m. Because the NOEprop towers had to provide support to the decks until structural frame was completed, up to 1960 props and 1730 support frames were present on site at any one time.
That Karrié Bau GmbH & Co. KG is satisfied with the products and the service provided by NOE-Schaltechnik is illustrated by, among other things, the contractor's many years of previous cooperation with the formwork manufacturer. It is therefore not surprising that other NOE solutions were also used in the construction of Rheinkai 500. Examples included the proven NOEtop wall formwork system, chosen for its versatility and robustness, and NOEdeck deck formwork system, which excelled through its speed of assembly.
NOEdeck
In the building of Rheinkais 500, the particular advantage of the NOEdeck system was the lightness of its aluminium components. To that can be added the low number of individual parts that make up the deck formwork system. The drop-head system ensures the deck formwork can be stripped, moved and erected quickly, easily and conveniently ? another plus point for the system. NOEdeck offered one more desirable characteristic ? the extremely resilient formwork facing ? which was also important to the Mainz site team. Fair-faced concrete finish class 2 was specified for the ceilings (concrete surfaces with normal requirements). Because they would, for the most part, remain visible, the Karrié Bau GmbH & Co team sought a high standard of appearance for the exposed concrete surface. At the same time, costs had to be kept in mind ? the ideal field of use for NOEdeck.
Satisfied customers
Based on the example of Rheinkai 500, it is clear that NOE-Schaltechnik systems were a great help on site, which is also confirmed by Mark-Christian Gälzer, when he says: "We could not have done some of the tasks on this project as efficiently without the help of NOE systems."
