Statement by Minister Qualtrough on the Announcement of Canada's Flag-Bearer for the Opening Ceremony of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games

(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 07/21/16 -- I was very proud to join Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Parliament Hill this morning to announce Rosannagh (Rosie) MacLennan as Canada's flag-bearer for the opening ceremony of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. As the returning Olympic champion from the London 2012 Games in trampoline, Rosie will be an inspiring leader that her fellow members of Team Canada can rally behind as they walk into Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on August 5, 2016.

Rosie, who grew up in King City, Ontario, represents so many of her teammates and fellow Canadians whose talents were first fostered in parks, in arenas and on gymnastics mats in small towns across the country. Regardless of the size of their community, our athletes get incredible support from their families, friends and neighbours. That support is critical to the approximately 315 athletes who will wear the maple leaf as they represent all 35 million Canadians at the Olympic Games this summer.

As the single largest investor in our country's sport system, the Government of Canada is proud of the support we have provided to Rosie and her teammates. Canadians have made a day-in, day-out commitment to these athletes-so when they do well, we should all take pride in their accomplishments.

On behalf of all Canadians, I congratulate Rosie on this prestigious honour and wish her and all of her teammates well at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games from August 5 to 21.
