(firmenpresse) - RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL -- (Marketwired) -- 09/09/16 -- On behalf of the Government of Canada and all Canadians, I congratulate Ross Wilson (Sherwood Park, Alberta), on winning Canada's first medal at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games. Ross's outstanding performance in the men's C1 individual pursuit track-cycling competition was rewarded today with a silver medal.

Although Ross has only been cycling internationally a short time, he's had a number of top results, including a silver medal in the 3,000-metre individual pursuit at the 2015 Para-Cycling Track World Championships. Cycling Canada has done an outstanding job supporting Ross and his para-cycling teammates to get to Rio in top form, culminating in this exciting Paralympic Games medal moment.

As the largest single investor in our country's sport system, the Government of Canada is proud of the support it has provided to the entire Canadian Paralympic Team. Through their federal government, Canadians have made a commitment to these athletes-so when they succeed, we can take pride in knowing that we have all been an important part of our athletes' journey.

As we approach the 150th anniversary of Confederation in 2017, I hope the accomplishments of Ross and the rest of the Canadian team will inspire us all to celebrate the special contribution that sport makes to our national identity.I wish the rest of Team Canada all the best as competition at the Games continues until September 18.
