' do I select the appropriate small business adviser?' could be a question that is very difficult for any company owner. But the first question we have to answer is why would they need one in the first place?
Running any business is not easy nowadays, from retail to manufacturing and everywhere in between, the amount of regulations and rules to comply with seems to be growing by the week. From health and safety to employment law, if you're not on top of everything, when things go wrong you stand to take a really big drop. In addition, you might know just how to perform the primary aspects of your company, but are you getting the maximum benefit from your own promotion? Are you managing records and your company info well and gaining from the advice they contain? Have you been concentrating your efforts on the customers who really generate profit instead of merely increasing your turnover? A small company adviser that is good should have the ability to take away the issues of running a company, enable you to concentrate on the things you do well and finally raise profit, the dollar volume and efficiency of your company.
So just how do I choose a superb small company adviser?
Unfortunately, there's no magic formula to choosing a small business adviser, but the first thing you must determine is 'What do I'd like to reach?' Some advisers specialise in a definite area - health, promotion and safety, recruiting, management systems, web design, etc - while others offer a complete bundle of consultancy which you only have to deal with one business. Narrowing down your requirements should enable you to focus on a handful of companies, either locally or nationwide, who look in order to handle the work you demand.
Once you have a specific goal in mind, make contact with the companies which you've shortlisted and ask them about what they could do to fulfil your requirements and what the likely price will be. Also, and very significantly, ask them for the contact details of businesses for whom they have done similar work for in the past - any small business consultancy that isn't willing to do this, should be taken off your shortlist. Talk to the past clients to get a notion of how well things went, were targets met, etc to develop an image of the advisers you're looking to deal with. Check out the credentials the small business adviser has - are they a member of any professional bodies who can confirm their abilities, do they have the right insurance in place for the work you want them to do - essentially, iron out any doubts you have over the professionalism in their company and the work they do.
Hopefully, you've now narrowed the selection down to one or two chances. This can be the phase to compose a transparent description of what you want to attain (not how you need them to reach it) and request the new shortlisted small company advisors to propose how they'll attain your goals, exactly how much it will cost and what comeback there will be if they can not achieve what you need. Equipped with all the facts and figures, the final selection is actually only down to personal feeling; assuming the responses and prices are fairly similar - select the appropriate small business adviser to work with and it should function as the best thing that has ever occurred to your company.
