Philadelphia, PA, London UK, February 16, 2011 - The peer review process is
without a doubt one of the most vital parts of scholarly publishing.  It can
also be the most time consuming.  To publishers that time equals money.  A new
report from ScholarOne, a Thomson Reuters business, examines new practices
publishers are using - with the help of electronic management tools - to
streamline the review process.

The report, Increasing the Quality and Timeliness of Scholarly Peer Review,
takes a close look at how publishers can speed up the review process without
sacrificing the quality of their journals.  While the actual workflow model of
the peer review process may differ among various journals and publishers, this
report is designed to highlight emerging practices and the electronic tools that
have helped journals adapt to 21st century scholarly publishing.

"Timeliness and quality are paramount to any journal," said Keith Collier, Vice
President and General Manager of ScholarOne at Thomson Reuters.  "And with
today's tools and technologies these goals are not mutually exclusive.
Strategies that improve the peer review process also improve the quality of
published articles, and, ultimately, their value to the scientific community."

While peer review will likely always remain an integral part of scholarly
publishing, workflow processes are dynamic.  The Thomson Reuters report looks at
emerging practices in the evolution of peer review, including open models of
peer review, integration of author registries such as ResearcherID and ORCID
into the review process, and new types of content submissions, including video
abstracts.

The report presents strategies for:
- Shortening submission time and providing authors with a more intuitive
submission process.
- Creating uniform submissions that are quicker to review and ultimately

publish.
- Identifying the appropriate reviewers who are availableright now.
