(Thomson Reuters ONE) - CellaVision, which develops and sells digital morphology products forthe routine analysis of blood and other body fluids, is adapting itscurrent range of products for use in veterinary laboratories. Severalveterinary laboratories are evaluating CellaVision's products inSweden and the US. The results are expected before the end of theyear 2009."The veterinary market is showing interest in our concept and ourproducts for quicker and more standardized analytical results, whichmay open up an entirely new market for our hematology products," saysYvonne Mårtensson, CEO of CellaVision. "A number of Swedishveterinary hospitals have evaluated our product with positiveoutcomes. However, we will wait to decide on when to launch ourproduct until the US market has made an evaluation. We are expectingresults to come in by the end of the year."Veterinary laboratories can use the CellaVision analyzers to assessblood cells as well as create digital images of slide areas,so-called Digital Slides. Blood analysis is an important part ofdiagnosing a number of diseases, including different types ofinfections and blood diseases. The benefits of using CellaVision'sproducts are the same as when using them on human blood, namelyquicker and more standardized results, digital archiving of resultsin patient journals, as well as the transfer of digital images toexperts outside the laboratory. One of the clinical studies was performed at the veterinarylaboratory at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU)in Uppsala. The response was positive:"Being able to make fast and correct diagnoses is of the essence forveterinarians," says Inger Lilliehöök, veterinarian at SLU. "By usingCellaVision's technology, veterinary hospitals can improve thequality of analytical results and increase the ability to diagnose. In that way, pets can be offered the appropriate care."In general, there is potential for medical technology products in theveterinary market.
