Umbrella contract for Muziekpaleis and Vredenburg Intersection
(Thomson Reuters ONE) - 's-Hertogenbosch - Heijmans and the City of Utrecht signed anumbrella contract for two sub-projects: the realisation of the newMuziekpaleis (Music Palace) and the construction of the VredenburgIntersection in Utrecht's inner city. A building contract valued at?81 million was signed for the construction of the Muziekpaleis. Atthe moment, the specifications for the Vredenburg Intersection arebeing developed by a joint construction team with the ultimateobjective of signing a building contract for this project as well.The Vredenburg Music Centre was partially demolished last year andwill be renovated and expanded. In total this represents 21,000 m² ofnew construction and 9,000 m² of renovated building. The large halldesigned by architect Herman Hertzberger will be preserved and fournew halls will be added for pop, jazz, cross-over and chamber music,with a total of over 5,000 seats. Loading and unloading will in thefuture take place underground so that this will no longer cause anyinconvenience aboveground. This also frees up room for a 'square'with a terrace along the restored Catharijnesingel. Construction onthe Muziekpaleis will be initiated as soon as the required permitsare obtained.A system of bridges will be developed where the Leidsche Rijn and theCatharijnesingel will meet in the future, using the VredenburgIntersection as the working title. This includes the undergroundapproach to the loading and unloading area as well.Heijmans will combine the Non-residential Building, TechnicalServices (Burgers Ergon), Road Building, Engineering (Breijn) andConcrete Construction and Hydraulic Engineering disciplines for theproject. The City and Heijmans have worked together to produce awell-thought out phasing plan for the construction.
