Kemira participates in Baltic Sea Action Group's Commitment to Act
(Thomson Reuters ONE) - Kemira GroupPress ReleaseAugust 28, 2009 at 12.30 pm (CET+1)Kemira has signed a Baltic Sea Commitment to Act. The companyannounced the commitment yesterday in Helsinki, Finland, at theKemira Baltic Sea Summit. The summit focused on ongoing projects andconcrete, planned actions concerning waste water treatment in theBaltic Sea catchment area. Over 100 participants and speakersrepresented financial institutions and environmental authorities, including participants at ministerial level, from water works anddifferent organizations. The Commitment to Act was initiated by the Finnish Baltic Sea ActionGroup (BSAG), a neutral organization founded in March 2008 for therescue of the Baltic Sea. Kemira's business activities are playing adirect role in decreasing the wastewater load in the Baltic Sea. Asignificant share of the communities and cities within the Baltic Seawatershed clean their waste water using chemicals supplied by Kemira. In its Commitment to Act, Kemira commits to lend its expertise andresearch efforts to returning sludge-borne valuable nutrients, nitrogen and phosphorus, safely into the natural cycle withoutcausing eutrophication in waterways. At the moment, the Baltic SeaAction Group is assembling a set of concrete actions to save theBaltic Sea, which is the most polluted sea in the world. All resultsof these commitments will be evaluated in the Baltic Sea ActionSummit in Helsinki, Finland in February 2010."All waste water treatment produces sludge. The more efficient thewaste water treatment, the greater the sludge disposal, and sludgedisposal is a growing problem. Without their controlled return tonature, the nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus) in sludge can driftback and eutrophicate waterways, or accumulate in landfills. Kemiracan make such sludge both hygienic and odorless, after which thesludge can be used in enhancing crop production in a safe manner. InFinland, sludge treated using Kemira's Kemicond method is accepted assuch as a method of soil improvement. We have also developed apreliminary treatment method for controlling the heavy metal contentsof sludge disposal, in cases where they restrict sludge use. In theNordic Countries, the heavy metal contents of municipal sludge arenot a problem," explains General Manager Aija Jantunen of Kemira'sWater segment.Kemira aims to be a key player and participant contributing to acleaner future for the Baltic Sea. As part of its commitment to this,Kemira is participating in joint research projects related to watertreatment, such as the Water Program for 2008-2012 launched by theFinnish Funding Agency for Technology and Innovation (TEKES). Kemirais also one of the main sponsors of the Helsinki Festival, with theBaltic Sea as a special theme. For more information, please contactKemira OyjAija Jantunen, General Manager, WaterMobile phone: 358 50 583 9714Baltic Sea Action GroupSaara Kankaanrinta, Co-founder, Secretary-GeneralMobile Phone: +358 50 545 0323Kemira is a focused company, best in water and fiber managementchemistry. In 2008, Kemira recorded revenue of approximately EUR 2.8 billion andhad a staff of 9,400.
