Geneva, 3 June 2011. Skyguide reports, on behalf of the Swiss Federal Office of
Civil Aviation (FOCA), that a Galaxy aircraft of TAG Aviation had to abort its
flight on 1 June owing to technical problems and was obliged to jettison fuel to
bring its weight down to the maximum prescribed for landing.
The fuel was dumped between 14.33 and 14.37 local time over the Canton of Vaud's
Jura mountains. The aircraft jettisoned some 500 kilogrammes of kerosene. The
fuel dump was performed at 12'000 feet (approx. 3'700 metres) above sea level.
The aircraft had taken off from Geneva for Tel Aviv. After jettisoning fuel, it
landed safely again in Geneva.
All fuel dumping activities are subject to strict guidelines which are designed
to minimise any additional risk to the aircraft and their impact on the
environment. No evidence has ever been found to date of any harm to humans,
animals or flora as a result of jettisoned fuel. Responsibility for ensuring
that the relevant guidelines are observed rests with the FOCA.
