EESTCargotec celebrates the foundation of its new multi-assembly unit inPolandCargotec celebrates today the establishment of a new multi-assemblyunit (MAU) in Stargard Szczecinski in Northern Poland. Thefoundation stone ceremony for the new multi-assembly unit is hostedby Cargotec's President and CEO Mr. Mikael Mäkinen. Secretary ofState Mr. Rafal Baniak from the Ministry of Economy is invited as theguest of honour in the event. The new MAU plays an important part inCargotec's long-term global supply strategy with an ideal location toserve the European markets as well as lower the production andtransportation costs and to strengthen the sourcing activities inCentral Eastern Europe. "We are proud of our investment and pleasedto take this step in building the most modern and energy-efficientassembly unit within the corporation, says Mr. Mäkinen".Cargotec announced the investment plan concerning the new assemblyunit in April this year. The purchase of 41 hectares of land wasfinalised in June 2009 and the construction of the assembly unit isproceeding on schedule. The production is planned to start during thesecond quarter in 2010 and will then accommodate some 200 employees.The new unit will support the production of a wide range ofCargotec's cargo handling equipment. "Being present in the StargardSzczecinski area offers excellent road and waterway connections toour markets in Europe, says Axel Leijonhufvud, Cargotec's ExecutiveVice President, Product Supply. "We are also very pleased about thegood and fruitful cooperation we have had with the local government".During this year Cargotec will already start assembly in rentedfacilities in the Goleniów region in Poland. The first productsplanned to be assembled in rented facilities are spreaders and mediumrange terminal tractors.Cargotec has been active in supporting the cooperation and researchto improve the state of the Baltic Sea since the beginning of 2007.Earlier this year Cargotec made a commitment to set environmentaltargets and to participate in the Baltic Sea Action Summit (BSAS),which will be organised in Helsinki in 2010 to offer a platform forheads of state, companies, business leaders, NGOs and individualcitizens to contribute to the well-being of the Baltic Sea.Cargotec has defined environmental targets for the different phasesof the supply chain: beginning from the purchasing and logistics ofincoming components and ending to the actual products and theirappropriate usage. "We have specified the following concrete targetlevels: logistical effectiveness, energy-efficient production,sustainable products and services and training to efficient andenergy-saving usage of the products", says Mr. Mäkinen. "For ourassembly factory in Poland this means, that we plan to have a carbonneutral heating solution and are studying alternative energy sourcesfor electricity.
