VentriPoint has created a diagnostic ultrasound tool to monitor patients with
heart disease, a leading cause of death in developed countries. The VMS(TM) is
the first cost-effective and accurate diagnostic tool for measuring right
ventricle heart function.
In June, the company announced its sixth installation, at the Alberta Children's
Hospital. There are now two systems in Canada (the other being at the Toronto
Hospital for Sick Children), one in Europe and three in the United States.
The VentriPoint Diagnostic System is based on patented technology used to create
anatomically accurate reconstructions and corresponding measurements of the
right and left ventricles of the heart. Under an exclusive license from the
University of Washington, the methods employed by the VentriPoint Diagnostic
System require only a sparse amount of anatomical input data to enable the
automated knowledge based reconstruction in 30 seconds or less.
The licensed technology includes a method to reconstruct the surface of an
object using three dimensional imaging data, known as the piecewise smooth
subdivision surface reconstruction method. It also contains software and
proprietary knowledge to create three dimensional imaging data from a standard
two dimensional imaging machine. This method, known as Knowledge Based
Reconstruction, is the basis for VentriPoint's initial planned commercial
service application. Multiple peer reviewed papers have been published in
support of the accuracy of these methods.
Using key anatomical points identified by the clinician, the VentriPoint
software generates a three dimensional surface model by referencing the
databases embodying knowledge of similar heart shapes for the specific disease
state application. Applying knowledge weighting, interpolation and scaling, this
Knowledge Based Reconstruction method supplies an accurate three dimensional
model with volume and ejection fraction measurements.
The knowledge databases are a key feature to the speed and ease of use of the
VentriPoint Diagnostic System. Accurate volumetric and ejection fraction results
are generated without requiring additional sonographer training and with less
than five minutes of additional time for data transfer and analysis.
Congenital heart disease is the first application in a suite of applications for
all major heart diseases including pulmonary hypertension, cardiovascular
disease and heart failure - a multibillion-dollar market potential. Canada and
Europe (CE Mark) have granted approval for the sale of VentriPoint's VMS(TM)
diagnostic tool and it is pursuing the US-FDA approval through the 510(k)
process.
Pulmonary arterial hypertension is the most serious form of the five recognized
groups of pulmonary hypertension. It is a devastating disease with an average
lifespan of less than 3 years after diagnosis if untreated. It affects
individuals of all ages from infancy to the elderly. Although treatment started
early after detection appears more effective than when started later, the
majority of patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension are diagnosed late.
The disease can occur for no known reasons but also occurs in association with
many common conditions such as chronic liver disease and liver cirrhosis;
rheumatic disorders such as scleroderma or systemic lupus erthematosus;
congenital heart disease (even if repaired) and HIV. With increasing
availability of effective therapies, and recommendations to start treatment
early, test enabling detection as early as possible should prove invaluable.
