(firmenpresse) - Who’s Afraid of the Foreigner Next Door?

VIENNA, 7 November 2017 – This month, METROPOLE, the magazine with an international eye on Vienna visits Austria’s eight neighbors in The Foreigner Next Door. The cover story, “Family Matters” (p 18) examines the historical ties that have dissolved and recreated borders and continue to bind Austria to the CEE. Austria’s geographic location paired with its western orientation has made it an economic and social game changer for the region.

The cover was illustrated by the fantastic Francesco Ciccollela.

In this issue, you will find

“Don’t call me Tüte” p 10, Op-Ed, Andreas Rainer
Germans and Austrians perpetually misunderstand one another, in language and cultural. It fuels an ongoing feud, a special love-hate relationship that shows no signs of dying down. Our resident Wiener Andreas Rainer explores the shared quirks and stark contrasts that feed the flame.

“Intrigue and Love: Austria’s special relationships” p 24, International
Each of the Alpine Republic’s eight bordering countries has its own story with Austria. From Austria’s refusal to accept Liechtenstein’s claim to aristocracy to the beef between Carinthia and its Slovene population. Austria’s relationship status has and will always be: It’s complicated.

“Big Break Vienna” p 34, Business, Michael Bernstein and Susanne Gottlieb
With 178 companies relocating to Austria in 2016, the capital has become a rising star for founders. But entrepreneurship can be tough anywhere, and here, the competition has become fierce. The tiny nation is in a strong position to attract newcomers with its central location, funding infrastructure and international credibility, says Markus Raunig, managing director of AustrianStartups.

“The Balkan Connection” p 40, Special Report, Liam Hoare
Will Austria’s EU presidency in 2018 bring with it an expansion of the EU to Serbia and Montenegro? The two countries remain the favorites for membership, but hurdles remain before they could join in 2025. But Foreign Minister (and likely chancellor) Sebastian Kurz says it remains a priority: “The EU must not allow a vacuum to form in the Balkan countries, something which others would be quick to fill.”

“Vienna’s Banking Bid” p.44, EU Brief, Benjamin Wolf
Following the Brexit vote, two EU agencies are poised to leave London, and amidst cutthroat competition, Vienna is a prime contender for their new home. The decision will be made on the November 20th and could give Vienna new standing as a financial and banking hotbed.

Quotes from the issue

“Terms such as Oktoberfest, BMW and German efficiency have become trademarks around the globe. And Austria? Lederhosen, Dirndl and beer – all those Austrian icons have long since been stolen by the Bavarians, leaving us as the country where weird things are going on in basements.” Andreas Rainer, Author p 10, Op-Ed, “Don’t Call Me Tüte”

“Orbán is quite sympathetic towards the FPÖ, and this is mutual. I think Orbán really hopes for a coalition of ÖVP and FPÖ – vindication of his hard-liner stance on the refugee issue.”
Peter Kreko, executive director of the Hungarian think tank Political Capital p 22, Cover Story, “Family Matters”
