Readability of labels – a question of material
In thermal transfer printing, the printer, the label and the ribbon must fit together. If the printing of a label and its fully automatic labeling have to meet the highest demands on quality, reliability and safety, it is beneficial to get the devices, transfer modules and consumables from one provider.

Every value chain process requires labels. In the warehouse and during transport they are required with packages, shelves and box pallets. In the factory, they stick on dirty or oily surfaces, outdoors even weatherproof. In deep-freeze rooms they withstand extremely low and in the production of PCB extremely high temperatures. In industrial cleaning, they resist chemicals and dissolvers, while at sea they are saltwater proof. Food demands labels free of substances that endanger health and they have to be approved for this purpose. All of these applications have one thing in common: the information on the label must be clearly readable.
Maximum process reliability
When it comes to choosing the right label, the material is a decisive factor. Paper labels are very versatile and provided by cab smooth and wood-free, with a rough surface or a special coating. When it comes to high resistance to humidity, temperature and tear, plastics are first choice – like polyethylene, polypropylene, polyester and polyimides.
The surfaces of cab labels are optimized for high resolution in thermal transfer printing. The diameters of the rolls and cores as well as the windings correspond with cab printers. Amongst others, cab labels are optimized for automated processing.
Standard or customized
Depending on the requirements, customers – also depending on the industry - require customized label solutions in order to complement work processes practically. cab evaluates all the demands, applies them to the specifications of the materials and offers a solution. As for marking typeplates, plastic cab labels with a metallized surface have proven. Self-laminating label foils made of PVC smoothly follow the shapes of cables and other round materials. For varnishing work, transparent laminated labels are offered to protect the base label. After varnishing, the protective label can be removed with a pull-tab.
Ribbons of wax or resin qualities
In a thermal transfer procedure, a special ribbon is heated by the print head selectively. The color layer of the ribbon melts and transfers onto the surface of the label. Depending on the application and the label material, cab provides the ribbon qualities wax and resin, as well as resin-wax mixtures. All of these have a special back coating to better dissipate residual heat, avoid static electrification and friction. This improves the quality of the imprint and extends the lifecycle of the print head.
Wax ribbons make sense especially when printing on paper, because wax melts very well into the label material. Resin-wax mixtures make flexible in case of universal printing on smooth paper and plastics. Resin ribbons have a perfect design for rough surroundings, when plastic labels are printed. This is mainly due to their ruggedness: Synthetic resin is scratch and smear proof and resistant to chemicals and oils.
