There are several states that have the most senior physicians that are still actively practicing which includes
New Mexico - This is an attractive state for many senior physicians because it is known for a retirement state. New Mexico has the highest percentage of actively practicing senior physicians with 37% of the physicians over the age of 60 years. This includes over 1800 members of the physician workforce.
Hawaii - This is paradise for many people practicing. Most of the physicians wont travel that far to retire. There are over 4,000 actively physicians in Hawaii.
New Jersey - New Jersey is not as warm as Hawaii but the physician population accounts for 35% of the physician workforce totaling over 9,000. This state will be in need of doctors in the upcoming years
Montana - Montana attracts many physicians that are looking for a higher level of practice autonomy and outdoor beauty. Their physician pool is small with a little over 800 but 35% of this group is over the age of 60.
Maine and Vermont - These two states are tied when comparing high levels of practicing senior physicians. Both states are reporting around 34% of their practicing physicians are over the age of 60.
California - There are a little over 105,000 practicing physicians that are living in California. Around one-third of these physicians are over the age of 60. California will soon need doctors as these 35,000 are near retirement.
New York - New York also has around one-third of their practicing physicians that are over the age of 60. The 24,000 senior physicians will soon join the retirement trend adding more physician shortages.
