Military Vet and Amputee Loses 116 lbs. and His Wheelchair
Victim of a Drunk-Driving Accident, Vet Regains Mobility Through Weight Loss Program
(firmenpresse) - SOUTHFIELD, MI -- (Marketwire) -- 08/23/11 -- Alan Opra, a military veteran, loses 116 lbs. and regains mobility after being an amputee victim of a drunk-driving accident, gaining excessive weight, and being confined to a wheelchair.
Alan's life changed on July 16, 2005 after being hit by a drunk driver. As a result, his leg was amputated above his left knee. His home was not handicap accessible so he was forced to stay at a hotel for 7 months. "During this time I gained at least 80 lbs. When I finally moved into an accessible home I kept gaining. I just didn't know what to do," states Alan. From 2005-2010 Alan spent the majority of his time in a wheelchair. Alan states, "Weight gain for an amputee can be a life sentence with the punishment being confinement to a wheelchair. Not to mention the many other that go along with ." Alan was eventually equipped with prosthesis but the excessive weight gain had pushed his weight to 396 lbs. and made it near impossible for him to use the device without causing extreme fatigue and putting him in dangerous situations.
"I thought about surgery but I didn't want to take the chance and I knew I had the will to lose the weight. I just didn't know how," says Alan. Through suggestion of his doctor and Prosthetist, he applied to and was approved by his insurance company to enter a medically supervised . "I checked around and I got information on different programs and MWLC (Medical Weight Loss Clinic) seemed like the best one for me because you ate store bought food," says Alan. Alan was put on a weight loss program based upon his medical profile with a main focus on developing healthy and satisfying eating habits. The program consisted of one-on-one counseling, weekly weigh-ins, healthy recipes to use with store purchased food, and nutritional supplements. "The thing I really liked about the program was I was changing my lifestyle not just losing weight," says Alan.

Now, less than a year later, he is free of his wheelchair and with the assistance of a prosthesis, Alan is walking in excess of 5 miles at a time without a problem.
