Pohjola Insurance and the Finnish Ice Hockey Association have agreed to continue
their partnership for the 2011-2012 season, continuing a partnership they have
had for decades. The highlights during these years were the World Championships
held in Finland in 1997 and 2003, and Finnish gold medals in 1995 and this
spring. In 2012, the World Championships will be played in Finland again.
"Pohjola Insurance is our longest-standing partner, and we are pleased to
continue this partnership. OP-Pohjola Group operates locally, and we too at the
Hockey Association like to see that everyone in Finland should be able to enjoy
hockey in one way or another," says Matti Nurminen, the Managing Director.
"Hockey should be fun and safe. Our target is on the one hand to spark an
interest in the sport in children who put on their skates for the first time and
train them to become well-behaved players, and on the other hand nurture those
with true talent to make it to the top."
Pohjola camps and hockey schools - breeding ground for future national team
players
The Association organises an annual Pohjola Camp in February-March for 180 of
the most talenting 14-year-old hockey players, who are taught what it takes to
be a top player, on and off the rink. During the same week, 120 of the most
talenting 15-year-old hockey players for the Top Pohjola Camp, with 44 of them
chosen for the first under-16s national side.
Pohjola Insurance is also the Association's partner as it engages the more than
200 clubs nationwide to organise uniform hockey schools for children aged
between 3 and 7 to learn to skate properly and play the game well.
"Hockey is Finland's top sport and we are pleased to join forces with the
Finnish Ice Hockey Association to encourage children and youngsters to an active
and healthy lifestyle. This year we are also encouraging girls to step out by
organising their own Pohjola Camp," says Jouko Pölönen, Pohjola Insurance's
President.
Pohjola is Finland's largest insurer of licensed athletes, hockey players alone
numbering some 60,000.
