(Thomson Reuters ONE) - Wärtsilä Corporation, Press release, 17 September 2009, at 11.30 am(EET)Wärtsilä, a leading supplier of flexible power plants for thedecentralized power generation market, has been contracted to supplya barge-mounted power plant to serve a mining operation in Papua NewGuinea. The contract, signed in August, is valued at approximatelyEUR 57 million. The customer is Lihir Gold Limited, a leading globalgold company, and the power plant will provide electricity to itsLihir Island gold mine. The power plant is scheduled to be fullyoperational by April 2011.The barge-mounted plant will be based on Wärtsilä 20V32 enginesoperating on heavy fuel oil. Since the plant is planned as being aninterim solution to the company's power needs for the site, it wasdecided to mount the power plant on a barge so that it can be latermoved to another location when no longer needed at Lihir Island.A barge-mounted power plant solution has the excellent advantage oflocation flexibility, and is, therefore, an ideal solution forproducing power on an interim basis. Wärtsilä has earlier suppliedsome 20 power barges to the Philippines, Jamaica, the DominicanRepublic and Bangladesh.Extra electrical power was needed at the mine since Lihir GoldLimited is in the process of extending the facilities. The companyrequired a flexible power solution for interim use, and emphasisedthe importance of having a firm and specified delivery time."Wärtsilä has been able to assure this valued customer that we canmeet the delivery requirements, and we have worked closely with themthroughout the process in evaluating different solutions, scopelevels and clarifications. Our past experience in providingbarge-mounted power plant solutions, together with our supportcapabilities in the region, were both important factors in Wärtsiläwinning this valuable contract", says Alf Doktar, Regional Director,Asia and Australia, Wärtsilä Power Plants.Wärtsilä has earlier supplied more than 200 MW of power generatingequipment for a number of projects in Papua New Guinea, includingtwelve Wärtsilä 32 type engines to Lihir Gold Limited. For further information, please contact:Mr Atte PalomäkiGroup Vice President, Communications & BrandingWärtsilä CorporationTel: +358 40 5476390e-mail: atte.palomaki(at)wartsila.comMr Alf DoktarRegional Director Asia and AustraliaWärtsilä Power PlantsMobile: +358 40 5866946e-mail: alf.doktar(at)wartsila.comTrade media contacts:Ms Maria NystrandPublicity Manager,Wärtsilä Power PlantsDirect tel: +358 10 709 1456e-mail: maria.nystrand(at)wartsila.comWärtsilä in briefWärtsilä is a global leader in complete lifecycle power solutions forthe marine and energy markets.
