French Canal Holidays Not to Miss: Explore Epernay

French Canal Holidays Not to Miss: Explore Epernay

ID: 591200

(firmenpresse) - A visit to Epernay is unmissable for those who enjoy a glass of champagne. Walk down the Avenue de Champagne and discover some of the world’s most famous champagne houses all near each other, including Moët et Chandon, Mercier and De Castellane. Head down beneath the surface of Epernay and you’ll get a glimpse of the town’s 200-year-old tunnels, which are maintained at cool temperatures to produce this delicious tipple.

Set in beautiful countryside, Epernay is home to some charming architecture including the town hall, Château Perrier museum and the Théâtre Gabrielle-Dorziat. Take in the full majesty of the area’s intriguing history and culture as you wander through its streets and sample some of the best sparkling wine around on the Champagne Route.

Mercier

One of the residents of the Avenue de Champagne is Mercier, a brand famous all over the world. Having been founded back in 1858, this stylish outfit is home to a maze of tunnels that stretch out over 18 kilometres. The cellars are grand and have surprisingly high ceilings. For special occasions some of them are decorated tastefully with chandeliers.

Town Hall and Gardens

Another reason why Epernay is one of the best French canal holidays out there is the stunning town hall and charming gardens. You’ll find both on the end of the Avenue de Champagne; the former is a remarkable and luxurious mansion that was donated to the town as a gift from the Auban-Moët family. However, it is the gardens that steal the show here. Designed by the Bühler Brothers, this area of the grounds is home to delightful flower beds and an impressive pavilion.

Moët et Chandon

Perhaps the most famous of Epernay’s champagne houses is Moët et Chandon, a brand that has received global recognition and attention for its fantastic product. Here, you’ll find a remarkable labyrinth of tunnels that reach an incredible 30 kilometres in length. A tour through the cellars will invite you to gain a great understanding of the production process – and, of course, you’ll get to sample this prestigious drink before you depart.

Jardin Botanique de la Presle

French canal holidays are famous for the areas of natural beauty which they offer, and Epernay is no exception here. Having been laid out two decades ago, this botanic garden has achieved the well-respected ‘Jardin Remarquable’ label.

Château Perrier

Having originally been built for the eccentric Charles Perrier, this nineteenth-century mansion is stunning in its architectural innovation. It was built in the renaissance Louis XIII style and has acted as the headquarters of the British army in 1940 before becoming the base for the Germans between 1940 and 1945. For those interested in the history of the WWII, Château Perrier truly is an unmissable stop on your tour of this town.

When it comes to French canal holidays, Epernay is undoubtedly one of the finest destinations you can choose. Which champagne house will you pay a visit to first? Will it be the sophisticated and intriguing cellars of Mercier or the world-famous Moët et Chandon?
