(firmenpresse) - Geocaching is become the latest craze, and it’s the perfect way to enjoy a great family experience during your Menorca holiday. When you add to the fun of the hunt Menorca’s long history of piracy, and the opportunity for some great tales, then the excitement is even greater.

So, What is Geocaching?

It’s really very simple.Containers, usually with a log book and pen, are hidden somewhere. The GPS coordinates are posted (usually online) and the hunt begins. It’s a hunt with no prizes, just the satisfaction of finding the cache. If you find the “treasure”, you write your name and the date you discovered it in the log book (you can also record your find online) and return the container to its hiding place.

What is really great about this “sport” is that anybody can get involved. In fact, there is a community of over 6,000,000 geocachers and 2,000,000 geocaches waiting to be found around the world.

How Many Geocaches Are There in Menorca?

At the time of writing there are more than 60 geocaches spread across the island. This means that wherever your Menorca holiday takes you – you won’t be far from “buried treasure” and then opportunity to explore the island and perhaps discover hidden beauty spots that you didn’t know existed.

There are, however, a few things you should keep in mind when setting out on your geocache adventure. If you remember them and stick to them, then you’ll have a fascinating and memorable experience.

· Thanks to its long history and diverse natural beauty, Menorca is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. This means that when you are exploring the island in search of the geocache, be aware of your surroundings and take care not to damage any archaeological remains or disturb local wildlife.

· Remember, when you are on your quest to dress appropriately both for the weather conditions and the conditions you’ll find in the field.

· Many geocaches contain mementos left by the last “discoverer”. Feel free to take them so long as you leave something of yours behind.Remember also not to leave food or drink that could damage the geocache container and perhaps even be dangerous to local wildlife.

· Replace the geocache container exactly where you found it.The only exception is if it was concealed in an animals’ den, nest or burrow. This is strictly against the rules of geocaching. In a case like this, leave it close to its original location and log on to the geocache web site to make a report.

And, if after finding your first few geocaches you feel like leaving one of your own, check out any of the explanatory videos you can easily find online for more information.

And if you find any real buried pirate’s treasure – remember who told you about geocaching on your Menorca holidays.
