It's like a stamp of approval that says this account is real and it will cause friends as well as competitors to become green with envy.
On a final note I wish to share a secret that Tueb Homie shared with me which is that accounts with large follower counts have a more difficult time getting verified because the fan base is already familiar with the real account however smaller accounts that are noteworthy and who get impersonated often have a harder time out ranking the copy cats, and so they do verification over this. That means that getting followers is not the name of the game UNLESS you have a blue check yourself otherwise it's getting more and more difficult for you to get one.
