Buses, trains and guided tours: no matter how you decide to travel, there are plenty of options for transport from Florence to Siena for every traveller.

(firmenpresse) - Ahh, Italy: the home of delicious food (did someone say pizza and pasta?), unforgettable landscapes and some truly one-of-a-kind art. The Tuscan region is particularly impressive for its Renaissance-influenced cities, including iconic Florence and charming Siena. If you have the time, why not visit both, to take in more of this wonderful Italian region?

There are many ways to get from Florence to Siena, including hiring a car, buses, trains and local tours. What will work best for you depends on your timetable, budget and personal preferences – so we’ve narrowed down some of the most convenient options, no matter what your travelling style is.

Renting a Car

If you’re feeling brave you can hire a vehicle to drive yourself along the Italian countryside and through the towns you decide to explore. Renting a car allows you the freedom to travel where you want when you want, and the extra room is convenient for visitors who need the luggage space for all the souvenirs they’re planning on taking home.

If do you decide to hire a car for your trip from Florence to Siena, be sure to plan for traffic between the cities, and get ready to navigate some of the trickier streets when you get to your destination. Travelling between the two cities takes about an hour and fifteen minutes, or you can take the scenic La Cassia route (slightly longer) to take in some fabulous views along the way.

Public Transport: Buses and Trains

If navigating narrow streets and learning a new set of traffic laws isn’t your cup of tea, you might consider taking a train or a bus for your journey from Florence to Siena. These transport options run on set schedules and allow for the leisurely experience that comes with being able to sit back and enjoy the ride to your destination.

Buses

Although the bus station in Florence can be a little tricky to find at first, the ‘Rapida’ bus will take you directly between cities in an hour and fifteen minutes, while the slower ‘Ordinaria’ takes an hour and a half. The central square is walking distance from Siena’s Piazza Gramsci, where the bus will drop you off.

Trains

Trains between the towns provide a little more of a challenge, since Siena is perched on a hill and only accessible by foot or by vehicle. Some trains require a switch at Empoli, while others are direct – on average, a train from Florence to Siena takes between an hour and a half and two hours, and requires a hike up the hill (or a short bus trip) upon arrival.

Organised Tours

One final option that’s well worth considering is booking on to an organised tour that takes in both cities and several stops in between. An air-conditioned and comfortable coach tour will take you all the way from Florence to Siena in comfort and style. Plus, a knowledgeable guide will keep the drive interesting with their top-notch knowledge of the region along the way.

But no matter how you decide to travel, your trip through Tuscany is sure to be one for the memory books.
