A Day Out in Ciutadella
The locals fondly call the Ciutadella ‘Vella i Bella’, meaning ‘Old and Beautiful’. And for good reason: beneath the deep blue skies of a summer’s day, townhouses line the cobbled streets, boutiques selling hand-made Menorcan goods can be found on every corner, and the local harbour attracts sailing boats in numbers.
Ciutadella is also home to traditional food markets galore. Between tapas featuring iconic berenjenas con miel—aubergine with honey—and the fresh seafood market Mercat de Peix, there are so many local delicacies to sample you’ll be spoilt for choice come lunchtime.
Beaches Beyond Compare
Whether you’re hoping for idyllic white sands or aspiring towards waters lined with shingle, the island has the perfect beach for you. One of the better-known white sand beaches here is Son Saura. Situated close to Ciutadella, this spot is a great place to sunbathe after a little exploring and a good helping of ice cream at the harbour.
The island has so many more beaches to choose from, but there are some highlights that shouldn’t be missed during your Menorca family holidays. The shallow lagoon at Es Grau should be at the top of the list for those with young children. It has all the restaurants and facilities you need, yet still retains that photogenic element of appearing almost untouched. And, if you love wildlife, make sure to head to the quiet Ses Salines end of Cala Tirant. The sands tend to be quieter and you can often spot terrapins while strolling along the walkways.
Admire the Colourful Flora of Camí de Cavalls
The Camí de Cavalls coastal path circling the island has recently reclaimed some of its former glory. In Medieval times, the path served to transport people and their wares from one end of Menorca to the other. Thanks to the recent restoration, it now offers a fantastic way to view the fabulous local flora. Stretch your legs for as long or as little as you like: the journey between Cala Binimel-la and Cala Pregonda will only take thirty minutes, while the easiest hike is probably from Cala d’Algaiarens to Cala Morell.
If you’d rather not get that energetic, horse riding tours are available as an alternative.
Explore Caves in the Waters and atop the Cliffs
The island’s coastline boasts more than just untouched sandy beaches. Hidden coves around the gentle waters of Cala en Porter and Es Grau not only provide another excellent snorkeling opportunity, but give a great excuse to hire a kayak and explore the caves.
Menorca’s secluded Cala Coves even sport an incredible collection of ninety prehistoric caves. You’ll find them atop the island’s rocky cliffs, where tortoises and lizards wander around the sunbathing ledges and there are hidden spots that are great for swimming.
