Inspiring Day Trips from Florence: Discover the Delights of Fabulous Fiesole

ID: 608775

Escape the crowds of Florence with a day trip to the charming hilltop village of Fiesole, which offers breathtaking views over the city.

(firmenpresse) - Tourists looking for day trips from Florence often overlook the tiny town of Fiesole. We’ve no idea why, as this charming hilltop village is packed with character and full of hidden historical gems, including Roman baths and original Etruscan walls. At least the absence of crowds makes Fiesole a peaceful place to escape to and a wonderful spot to spend a leisurely, laid-back day wandering through picturesque churches, museums and gardens.

As far as day trips from Florence go, this beautiful town is one of the closest options for sure - you can even walk to it in an hour! Perched on a hill among olive groves, it offers magnificent panoramic views over ‘la bella Firenze’, nestled in the valley below.

Charmed already? Here’s how to spend the perfect day in Fiesole.

Piazza Mino da Fiesole
The main square of Fiesole is where you’ll arrive. Check out the 11th-century cathedral, whose bell tower dominates the skyline, and admire its frescoed ceiling and the relics of Saint Romulus in the crypt. Piazza Mino is also the perfect spot in which to sit and enjoy a cappuccino or gelato when you need a rest from exploring.

The Bandini Museum and Archaeological Sites

The Bandini Museum is Fiesole’s answer to the Uffizi, showcasing beautiful Italian artwork from the 12th to the 14th century. Here you get two attractions for the price of one, as entry to the Bandini includes a ticket to Fiesole’s archaeological museum and sites. The impressively well-preserved Roman amphitheatre is a must-see attraction, as are the museum’s range of artefacts from the Etruscan era and Bronze Age. Remember, Fiesole is actually older than Florence and the most important regional settlement of the Etruscan era.

The Monastery of San Francesco

We can assure you that the hike up Via San Francesco (the steepest street in town) is more than worth it for the jaw-dropping views over the rooftops of Florence. Get your breath back and take some photos from the terrace of the Monastery of San Francesco, and then visit its chapel and museum, still run by monks. An insider tip is to head back into town via the path in front of the chapel. Crossing through the park, it offers even more spectacular vistas over the city below.

Restaurants

Feasting on traditional Tuscan fare in a local trattoria is the best way to round off your day in Fiesole. At weekends, the smart venue of La Reggia degli Etruschi is packed with in-the-know locals on day trips from Florence enjoying its outstanding Tuscan menu. For something more laid-back, snag a spot around one of the long wooden tables inside Vinandro. Marinated herrings, tripe, and Tuscan meat dishes are some of the local delights to savour in this authentic tavern-style restaurant.

They say good things come in small packages, and this adage definitely rings true for this charming Tuscan town This petite and tranquil Tuscan town feels a world away from its bustling neighbour, and despite its small size, there’s more than enough to do for visitors on day trips from Florence. If you’re looking for a slice of the real Tuscany, make sure not to miss Fiesole!
