ID: 611124

Florence and Tuscany tours are full of fascinating churches and cathedrals, but these five will leave you mesmerised by their majestic beauty.

(firmenpresse) - If there is one thing you can expect to see on Florence and Tuscany tours it is churches! There are a number of incredible cathedrals and churches in the region that are famous the world over, and many more that are not so well known but equally worth seeing. There are a host of hidden and less visited religious sites that are all unique and interesting in very different ways, and some of them are the real hidden gems of Florence and Tuscany. Tours of the city are a great way to get to know some of the lesser and more well known churches and they provide a fantastic insight into the history of this remarkable place.

Orsanmichele

San Michele in Orto is a grand old building from the fourteenth century that started off life as a place where grains were bought and sold. However, the building housed an artwork that was so revered by the religious inhabitants of the city that it eventually became a house of worship. The stone architecture and the windows of the building are a real treat for visitors, and it’s worth admiring them for a while before venturing in.

Santa Maria del Carmine

This church is more famous for its artistic pedigree than anything else, as it houses one of the most revered works in renaissance painting, the Brancacci Chapel, painted by Masaccio and Masolino. As well as the artwork within the building the appeal of this place is the exciting historical fact that this was where famous artists such as Leonardo, Botticelli and Michelangelo learnt new techniques.

San Miniato

This delightful church houses a crypt decorated with frescoes that will take your breath away. It’s a must-see on all Florence and Tuscany tours as its elevated location just outside the city walls give it one of the best vantage points of the city that you’ll find. It is also home to an order of monks famed for their tea and honey.

Santo Spirito

Famous for its connections to Brunelleschi, one of the designers of Florence’s Duomo, this church was designed and partly constructed under his orders. Although completed after his death, it nonetheless remains a work of exquisite beauty both inside and out. The interior of the church is also home to some of the most important and captivating artwork in the city.

San Lorenzo

Although the façade of the church remains merely bricks, the history of the design is one of the most impressive of the city’s many religious sites. Designed by Brunelleschi, this was the church of the famed Medici family, whose names are synonymous with the city. The façade, which was sadly never finished, was designed by Michelangelo, whose sculptures are also within the grounds of the church.

A Local’s View

Whatever you want to see on your visit to Florence and Tuscany, tours with a local guide are a great way to see it. The churches listed here are all well worth a visit and with a small group tour you’ll be able to get the most out of your trip.

Florence and Tuscany tours offer insight into this unique and impressive part of Europe, famed for its architecture, landscapes and culture. There is truly something for every type of holidaymaker in the region, and no matter where your passions lie, you are sure to find something that piques your interest.
