Intervale Farmers Emergency Fund Established After Hurricane Irene

(firmenpresse) - BURLINGTON, VT -- (Marketwire) -- 08/31/11 -- Intervale farmers, a collection of farm businesses that lease land from the non-profit Intervale Center, faced a second wave of devastating flooding this week, this time from the impact of Hurricane Irene. This late summer flooding comes after record high water levels this spring destroyed crops along the 135 cultivated acres of land that lie along the Winooski River.

On Monday, August 29, 2011, farmers, volunteers, and Intervale Center staff scrambled to salvage as many crops as possible before the Winooski River crested. Although some was harvested and stored, much of the produce planned for the late summer and fall markets was destroyed. The total amount of damage is still being assessed.

The Intervale Center has established a fund to help farmers offset crop losses and repair damage from the devastating impact of Hurricane Irene. Donations can be made online through the Intervale Center website: , designated to the "Intervale Center Farmers Recovery Fund." Donations can also be mailed to the Intervale Center, 180 Intervale Road, Burlington, VT 05401. Please make checks payable to "Intervale Center Farmers Recovery Fund." All contributions are tax-deductible.

Intervale farmers have been at the heart of the sustainable food movement in Vermont for over 20 years. "Intervale farmers have been feeding us, they've stewarded our land, they're our neighbors, friends, and important members of our community," said Travis Marcotte, Intervale Center Executive Director. "We are committed to do everything possible to help them in the wake of this devastating event."

The Intervale Center, a nonprofit organization established in 1988, works to build and strengthen community food systems in Vermont, across the U.S., and around the world.
