Canada Remembers the Liberation of Belgium

(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 09/02/11 -- Today, the Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Veterans Affairs, issued the following statement regarding the 67th anniversary of the liberation of Belgium by Allied Forces.
"Canadian Forces played a key role in the battle to defeat the German army. After more than four long years of harsh occupation, liberty was restored to the people of Belgium on September 4, 1944. More than 800 Canadians are buried in Belgium, after making the ultimate sacrifice in freeing the nation during the Second World War. As we mark this anniversary, it is our duty to honour the sacrifices and celebrate the achievements of the Canadians who brought freedom to the people of Belgium.
Canadian Forces fought through a bitter struggle against the German army. The 2nd, 3rd and 4th Canadian Divisions moved through Belgium, supported by the operations of the Royal Canadian Air Force and the Royal Canadian Navy. Canadians were given the important tasks of clearing coastal areas in the north of France and capturing the launching sites of German rockets to put an end to their attacks on southern England. The First Canadian Army also played a leading role in opening the Scheldt estuary, the gateway to the Belgian port of Antwerp.
We mark this anniversary by remembering the sacrifices made by these brave Canadians in bringing freedom to others. We are forever grateful for their important contributions and we owe it to them to remember."
