(firmenpresse) - WASHINGTON, DC -- (Marketwire) -- 09/04/11 -- The Maloof Money Cup, presented by Vans, came to an incredible close Sunday afternoon in Washington D.C. with pro skateboarding's Andrew "the boss" Reynolds claiming his first-ever Maloof Money Cup title and nabbing $160,000 for his near herculean effort in the head-to-head finals, defeating local favorite Jack Curtin before battling Manny Santiago and finally, his long-time friend, Ronnie Creager.

With temperatures in the 90s and 100 percent humidity, the nation's capital made the world's best professional skateboarders prove just how much they wanted the win. Creager, a walk-on in the qualifiers, beat out Tom Asta in the second round and Bastien Salabanzi in the final round to earn his spot in the finals. Both Reynolds and Creager were visibly exhausted as they competed in the final jam of the day. With less than a minute left, Reynolds took a quick water break, stood up, headed to the golden stair rail and nailed a kickflip lipslide that won him the contest.

"I've known Ronnie since I was a kid. He was the guy I always looked up to," said Reynolds. "It didn't feel like a contest today, we were just out there skating like we always do. All my friends are here, and we just skate. Some of the other contests are just too serious. Maloof is cool because it's just like being out skating with your friends. You don't think about the $160,000, you just skate."

Both Creager and Reynolds earned byes in the first head-to-head elimination round during today's finals due to their scores in Saturday's Semi Finals. Maloof Money Cup New York winner Greg Lutzka also earned a bye in the first round but was knocked out in the second round by Frenchman Bastien Salabanzi. The final standings (first through fourth, in order) are Andrew Reynolds, Ronnie Creager, Bastien Salabanzi and Manny Santiago.

The Maloof Money Cup D.C. also featured a 50,000 square-foot Festival Village offering DJs, autograph signings with pro skaters, merchandise, food vendors and an interactive skate park where thousands of local kids participated in events throughout the weekend. The brand new custom-designed skate park, modeled after D.C.'s Freedom Plaza, will be left behind for the community to use year-round, after the contest.

The day kicked off with the water Am Invitational where Ishod Wair beat out some incredible competition, earning $1,000, a one-year supply of water and a trip to the open qualifiers for the Maloof Money Cup South Africa later this month. Matt Berger placed second and Trevor Holden third.

"It's absolutely incredible to come to our nation's capital, build a world-class skate park that will remain behind permanently for the community, and put on an epic skateboarding event. The crowds were incredible; this was probably the best crowd we've seen at a Maloof contest. Despite the heat, they stayed on the edge of their seats and cheered these guys on down to the last second. Then you top it all off with Andrew Reynolds, the most beloved skater in the industry, beating out a very talented group of skaters to win it all, well, it's just incredible. I think we're all still in shock. What an amazing day."

Reynolds will join 15 other skaters, who's combined scores from New York and D.C. land them in the Top 16, that make up the Maloof All Pros and earn a trip to compete in the Maloof Money Cup World Skateboarding Championships in Kimberley, South Africa Sept. 30 - Oct 2.
