Cubic Technology Showcased at New Training Center
'Tactical Village' at College of DuPage First to Use MILES Gear for Law Enforcement Training
(firmenpresse) - SAN DIEGO, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 09/06/11 -- Technology from Cubic Corporation (NYSE: CUB) was in the media spotlight recently at a demonstration of a new Homeland Security Training Center near Chicago.
The $26 million regional training center, built by College of DuPage, was designed to provide training to police officers and other first responders. It includes an immersive 4,500-square-foot "tactical village," a two-story replica of a downtown street. To demonstrate the capabilities of its new center, the college re-created the North Hollywood Shootout, a famous 1997 bank robbery in Southern California considered pivotal in the evolution of police tactics, equipment and training.
Cubic equipped the training facility with its - Individual Weapons System (MILES - IWS) and its Miles After Action Review System (MAARS). MILES has been a staple of military training for many years, but this is the first facility for police and first-responder training using MILES gear. Cubic also installed its technology known as ASAULT (Advanced System Architecture for Urban Live Training), including cameras, a tracking system, microphones, smoke generators and other electronic equipment and software for creating realistic training scenarios, collecting sensor data and controlling the system. Cubic defense facilities in San Diego and Orlando developed the instrumentation.
Members of the media were invited to take part in a simulated shootout using Cubic gear. All three network-affiliated television stations in the region, the CBS affiliate in Los Angeles, and several newspapers and web sites gave extensive coverage to the August 17 re-creation. Cubic's technology was featured prominently in the coverage.
Police officers who participated in the demonstration were impressed with the facility and the Cubic instrumentation. "Yesterday was my first time using it, and I've never experienced anything like it before," said Paul Dilley, a detective with the North Aurora Police Department, about MILES. "It is far superior to the simulated munitions used in other training I've done."
