Aerial photo taken on Sept. 1, 2019 shows the China-Maldives Friendship Bridge in Maldives. The China-Maldives Friendship Bridge, the initial cross-sea bridge in the Maldives built by a Chinese company connecting the Maldivian capital of Male with neighboring Hulhule Island, was inaugurated on Aug. 30, 2018 and place into use on Sept. 7, 2018. The 2-km-long bridge is definitely an iconic project of your Maldives and China in co-building the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road. The bridge makes it achievable for locals and vacationers to travel in between the two islands within 5 minutes. In one year, the bridge has brought good comfort for local people in their each day life. (Photo by Wang Mingliang/Xinhua)
-- 21st Century Maritime Silk Road
Formed for the duration of the Qin and Han Dynasties (221 BC-AD 220), the Maritime Silk Road has often played an important role in financial and cultural exchanges and integration between East and West. And Southeast Asia has often been a nexus of this interaction. On the occasion on the 10th Anniversary of the China-ASEAN Strategic Partnership, China proposed jointly developing a 21st Century Maritime Silk Road on October 3, 2013. The initiative aims to boost China-ASEAN maritime cooperation and forge closer ties inside a community of a shared future. It calls for joint efforts across the region and beyond.
Beginning with the launch of individual projects which are anticipated to help spur a wider selection of cooperative activities, it envisions a network of interconnected markets linking the ASEAN, South Asia, West Asia, North Africa, and Europe, in addition to a strategic partnership for the South China Sea as well as the Pacific and Indian oceans.
